There should be very little play in a steering rack system. You're forgetting there are tie rods either side of the rack, each is in two parts, with an inner and outer ball joint. Fitting Position: Right; Fitting Position: Left; Fitting Position: Front Axle.
I have an advisory note saying "slight play in steering rack".
