So it was turning over ok when you put the jump lead on it, but not when you hadnt done? There is a relay in some cars to turn off other power loads like the radio to reduce the load at the battery during engine start. Sometimes a Renault Clio may not start because of problems with its crankshaft position sensor.
Try connecting the two poles across the starter motor to bypass the ignition celenoid/barrell.
Sadly 'warming it up' wont help since we left electrical valves behind a long time ago when the I have the exact opposite problem, my car radio will turn on, but I can't put it on a different radio or the cd I have the same problem with my new Sony dab unit changed the wires over with the red and yellow.

The engine won't turn over, there's nothing. Upon turning on the ignition on the Renault Clio, the spanner warning light will illuminate and extinguish as soon as the engine has started. Sometimes it takes ages to get it going and I've had to go away and return to the car.
